Above- #39 Title- “Humpback Singer” 1 of 50
Whilst filming his award winning documentary “Humpbacks from Fire to Ice” Ross spent six seasons off Maui, Hawaii and in the Inside Passage, South East Alaska capturing the natural history of the humpback whales which migrate between those locations. Working with the Hawaii Whale Research Foundation HWRF on a special NOAA permit, he was able to swim with the whales and record some extraordinary footage of these wonderful animals. Ross was able to locate and film a singing humpback which is typically a male broadcasting his extraordinary, complex song, heard many kilometres away and sometime can be heard above the ocean surface by the researchers. He captured this typical singing posture and extremely rare encounter in deep water off Maui.
