Whilst filming his award winning documentary “Humpbacks from Fire to Ice” Ross spent six seasons off Maui, Hawaii and in the Inside Passage, South East Alaska capturing the natural history of the humpback whales which migrate between those locations. Working with the Hawaii Whale Research Foundation HWRF on a special NOAA permit, he was able to swim with the whales, dolphins and a variety of marine creatures including these majestic Manta Rays found in the surrounding waters. Giant Manta Rays are often observed at particular hot spots off the Island of Maui where they aggregate at cleaning stations where smaller fish remove parasites from their skin. They are often found offshore, near the surface, or in areas where plankton is concentrated.
